Here Today, Here Tomorrow

Welcome to the "Here Today, Here Tomorrow" exploration module. Here you can see the different types of trash in our landfills, and see how long they will stay in a landfill.

There are many different ways of dealing with garbage:
  • LANDFILLING
  • INCINERATION (burning garbage)
  • LONG-HAULING (trucking garbage to a landfill outside your area)
  • WASTE REDUCTION AND RECYCLING

Living in small mountain communities can make it difficult and expensive to deal with the trash we generate. Because of the difficulties and expense involved in dealing with our trash, we should always try to practice the 3R's: REDUCE, REUSE, AND RECYCLE!

When we practice the 3R's, we can drastically reduce the amount of trash in our landfills. This is important because our trash stays in our landfills a lot longer than you might think. It is believed that a lot of our trash will remain in our landfills unchanged for thousands of years!

The graphic below illustrates the different types of trash that can be found in most landfills.

Paper (38%)

Yard Waste (13%)

Food Waste (11%)

Plastic (9%)

Metal (8%)

Glass (6%)

Wood (5%)

Other (10%)

Did you notice that the biggest portion of trash we throw into our landfills can be recycled?

That's right! Paper is one of the most easily recyclable kinds of trash- especially cardboard.

Can you find the other types of trash in the landfill that can be recycled? Can all of them be recycled in your town?
