Junk Art Projects!

Welcome to the "Junk Art Projects!" exploration module. Here you can see some projects you can do at home or school, using garbage and other junk!

One creative way to keep trash out of our landfill is to turn it into art!

You might think that only ugly art can be made from trash, but there are many profesional artists who use trash as part of their artwork.

You will need the following items for your junk art project:

Safety Scissors
Tape
Glue and/or Hot Glue Gun

When it comes to making "Junk Art" you are only limited by your imagination and talent!

Here are some guidelines for "Junk Art" projects for kids:

  • Your junk should be clean and durable

  • In general, avoid using cloth, paper or "precious" objects

  • Use only small pieces (if you have larger items, you can cut them into smaller pieces)

Here are some examples of the types of junk to collect:

old broken toys checkers, dominoes, game markers
pencil stubs dowels
used paintbrushes and toothbrushes old magic markers
plastic bottle tops combs
plastic picnic or fast-food utensils old household brushes
spools buttons
knobs gaskets
legos beads
broken tool handles small plastic containers
old keys broken rulers and yardsticks
wood and plastic clothespins plastic laundry baskets, buckets
plastic kitchen bowls electronic "junk" (from discarded radios, computers, etc.)
film canisters

Do you notice anything about the types of junk listed above? All of the above items are types of trash that are not commonly recyclable in small communities.

Can you think of other items you can use to create "Junk Art"?
